Men and women of different denominations are gathering in themarket square of Ouidah, Benin (West Africa) to embroider a redcircular cloak made of heavy linen with their own designs turning itinto a social painting. They are addressing what in their views isworthy of protection. All participants are wearing outfits that match thesame ochre yellow color of the embroidery yarn. The population isinvited to commission their own wishes like protection of their ownchildren, animals, nature, etc.Using the collectively ”charged" cloak, the Tschekpo Dance Companyis developing a choreography to thematize the participation and appreciation of foreign cultures with the explicit theme of protection.The particular attraction of the project is the simultaneity andequal treatment of different disciplines and cultures. Thecontemporary idea meets with archaic rituals. Movement interactswith static images. Voodoo rhythms encounters techno, modern balletconnects with African ritual dance. The aim is to establish a dialoguebetween diverging expressions. Different aspects create aninnovative integration.An interdisciplinary laboratory comes to life, everyone can learn fromeveryone. The collectively embroidered cloak becomes ananthropological novel gesture of social influence. It is a politicalstatement against injustice in hierarchically organized worlds.
